Content Marketing Ideas for Small Business in 2019

content marketing for small business

As we are coming to the end of the year I know that you are enthusiastically putting together your content marketing strategy for 2019. Or have you?

If this is something you have either been procrastinating or simply don’t know where to start, here are some ideas you can put into action for 2019.

Set a Schedule You Can Stick With

Consistency is your friend when it comes to posting content. Make a schedule and stick to it. A key to this is to keep it reasonable. Don’t tell yourself you’re going to do 2 live Facebook videos per week, an Instagram Live every day, and new posts 7 days a week. Oh, and a monthly podcast and weekly blogs. That’s just cray. Don’t set yourself up for failure – set yourself up for success! Quality is going to be way more important than quantity this year so make yourself really good, and then spread it out over multiple channels.

Make Your Blogs Locally Focused

Give your city some love! People will like it and so will Google. How many times do you Google “product” in “location.” Just yesterday I Googled “nail salon in Long Beach.” And guess what came up? Ads and Yelp… Boo! Start writing about things going on locally and use your city’s name in the title of your blog so Google and real-life people know that you are a legit, local solution for whatever they are searching for.

Also, consider updating the headline (H1) on your homepage to include the service you provide followed by your city. I use Content Marketing in Long Beach, for example, and I’m moving my way up the rankings for those terms slowly but surely.

Spread Your Content Over Multiple Platforms

You want to get the max amount of eyes on the stellar content you produce, so spread it over multiple channels. Everyone has a slightly different style of cruising the internet and social media, so blast your stuff all over. Pro tip – when doing this, make sure that your text and images look good on all platforms. Do some tests to make sure that an app isn’t stretching an image or cutting off your text, and adjust accordingly.

You can check to see if your content is mobile friendly on a desktop by dragging the bottom corner in so you have a long and narrow view of the screen. If everything stacks up nicely, you good. If not, figure out how to fix it 🙂

Create an Email Newsletter

I love telling the story of Bob the Chiropractor. If you live in Long Beach you have probably seen his face around town. The guy is on top of his marketing swag. I went to see him when I threw out my back about 2 weeks after my 30th birthday, officially making me feel old, but I got on his email list. You might think “yawn… who wants to read about chiropractic that much?” but he fills it with local events, office news, shout outs to other Long Beach businesses, and other seasonal fun stuff too. I love it! And guess what? He’s the doc I go to if I need an adjustment and he’s the guy I recommend to other people.

Your email newsletter shouldn’t be all salesy. It should add value and be interesting to all the people you send it to. You can sprinkle in bits of what you sell, sales you are running, etc., but don’t be too heavy-handed with selling. This isn’t the time or place for that.

Plan a Special Event with an Instagrammable Experience

Experiences are going to be a major part of content marketing in 2019, and this is a great opportunity for small businesses. Think about throwing an open house or event, invite your neighbors, customers, and friends, and make it super awesome so that people won’t be able to NOT share it on their social media channels. Set up a cute background for selfies, serve up refreshments from other local businesses for a double-dip in audience and promotions… I could go on and on with ideas! (Actually, if you want to do this, please contact me. I want to help! I love throwing parties!! lol)

So there you go. Some of my fave content marketing ideas for small business in 2019. It’s going to be a great year and I would love to help it be even greater for your business. And again, give me a shout if you want to talk about YOUR content strategy for 2019.
